The Grateful Dead Dancing Bear was originally used for the cover of The Grateful Dead Songbook. The design was created to grace the rear cover of the 1973’s History of the Grateful Dead, Volume 1 (Bear’s Choice) LP. Some have theorized that the colorful chorus line of lovable teddy bears is also partly inspired by Jerry Garcia’s “Papa Bear” nickname. Other’s believe The bear is a reference to Owsley “Bear” Stanley, who recorded and produced the album. Bear himself wrote, “the bears on the album cover are not really ‘dancing’. I don’t know why people think they are; their positions are quite obviously those of a high-stepping march.”

No matter how they got here – everyone loves the Grateful Dead Dancing Bears.
